What is happening in the library?

We celebrated Banned Books Week and our freedom to read by discussing why some people decide to ban books.  We also created arguments for banning books and against banning books.

Some arguments against banning books were:

  • Taking away options turns children away from wanting to read in the first place. (by Olivia)
  • Everyone has different interests, so if you take away what people may like, they are forced to read things that don't entertain them. (by Alana)
  • One adult's opinion shouldn't determine what everyone reads. (by Rachel, Cody, and Morgan)
  • The author has worked hard to write this book. (by Josh, Liam, and Mattie)
  • Some people may find it offensive, some may not.  Therefore it wouldn't be fair (by Abby and Braelyn)
  • It takes away the rights of American children. (by Morgan and Mark)
  • Children would be too sheltered. (by Will and Jacques)
Some arguments for banning books were:
  • Some books have racism. (by Matt and Daniel)
  • Books can change views of people. (by Colin and Kayla)
  • Innocent minds shouldn't be tainted with inappropriate material. (by Allison and Natalie)
  • Some children are too young to read certain content because of the inappropriate language and scenes. (by Kristina, Macy, and Ally)
  • Books could go against your religious beliefs. (by Matthew and Justin)
  • The books could lead to violence. (by Josie and Mya)

We have some very talented writers here at GMS.  The following was written by Elijah, one of our 8th grade students.

"There once was a place full of knowledge.  It had thousands upon thousands of books filled to the brim with knowledge.  Science, math, history, LA, horror, fiction, realistic, just all kinds of books you could imagine all in one place.  Hundreds, even thousands of people have been to this place but take it for granted.  They ripped the pages, bent the spine, threw them, and forgot them.  But also many read these books despite their worn outside.  They read them cover to worn cover.  They take care of them and take in all the knowledge.  This place was called a library and now their going extinct, being replaced by iPads, Kindles, and all kinds of tablets.  So at least treat their books like you would treat your hundred dollar tablet."
